Humble Inquiry – Edgar H. Schein

Do you ask so that you can tell? Or are you genuinely curious and interested in the answer? Edgar Schein tells us what humble inquiry is and explains that it is a behaviour, an attitude, an invitation that invites mutuality and trust, rather than a checklist or a prescribed script.  We come to understand the constraints and inhibitors of humble inquiry and why we tend to find it such a difficult practice to adopt and master.

In a world focused on task accomplishment, building relationships matters now more than ever.  Schein helps us realise that being interested, vulnerable and suspending our desire to tell, rather than listen, is the key to building open, trusting and respectful relationships.  I urge you to read this book if you wish to understand what a big difference small changes in behaviour can create. The art of humble inquiry might not be easy, yet it is worth learning.
